Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a training program that teaches people to recognize signs of a mental health or substance use challenge and to offer first-level support until professional help is available. It is the mental health version of physical first aid.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing provides the program, which began in Australia in 2001 and came to the United States in 2008. Trained instructors deliver the training.

What Does Mental Health First Aid Teach?

The training teaches people to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. It covers how to start a conversation, listen without judgment, and point someone toward help.

It aims to reduce fear and hesitation about talking about mental health. Many people hold back because they worry about saying the wrong thing, and the training gives them words and a simple approach.

It does not turn participants into counselors. It prepares them to support a colleague in the moment, not to treat or diagnose.

Is Mental Health First Aid Therapy?

No. The program presents itself as peer-level support that anyone can take, not as clinical treatment. Trained responders are not a replacement for professional care.

The goal is to connect a person with the right help sooner, whether that is a doctor, a counselor, or an employee assistance program.

Make this clear to participants and employees so nobody expects a first aider to act as a therapist.

How Do Employers Use Mental Health First Aid?

Many employers train a group of volunteers across teams and locations, so employees know someone they can approach. Some also train all managers.

OptionWho is trainedBest for
Volunteer first aidersInterested employees across teamsBuilding a visible support network
Manager trainingPeople leadersSpotting concerns early and referring well
Broad rolloutLarge share of the workforceShifting culture and reducing stigma

Pair the training with clear next steps. A first aider needs somewhere to send people, such as an employee assistance program.

How Does It Differ From an EAP or Wellness Program?

An EAP provides confidential counseling and referrals from professionals. Mental Health First Aid builds everyday skills among coworkers so people get support sooner.

A wellness program promotes general health habits. The first aid training is narrower, focused on spotting and responding to a person in distress.

The employee wellbeing entry covers how these pieces can fit together.

What Should You Consider Before Rolling It Out?

Set expectations first. Explain what first aiders do and do not do, how privacy is handled, and where they should send someone who needs more help.

Get leadership support and fund the time. Training is only part of the job; people also need time and permission to have these conversations.

  • Make participation voluntary for first aiders.
  • Give them a simple escalation path for urgent situations.
  • Protect confidentiality and avoid sharing personal details.
  • Check in with first aiders, since supporting others can be draining.

How Do You Measure Success?

Track how many people are trained, how aware employees are of support options, and use of related services such as the EAP. Short pulse surveys can show whether people feel more comfortable raising concerns.

Avoid measuring by asking who needed help. That can compromise privacy and discourage people from speaking up.

Review the program annually and refresh the training as people leave or change roles.

What Does a Conversation Look Like in Practice?

A first aider notices a change, such as a coworker who seems withdrawn, and finds a private moment to ask how they are doing. They listen without judging, avoid offering quick fixes, and ask whether the person wants help.

If the person is in crisis or at risk of harm, the first aider follows the emergency steps from training and gets professional or emergency help. Afterward, they respect privacy and check in gently.

How Does HR Cloud Fit Into Mental Health First Aid?

HR Cloud does not provide mental health training or counseling. Its employee mobile app shares announcements and sends push notifications targeted by location, department, or group, which can help share information about support resources.

Use a certified provider for the training itself.
